Evangelism vs. Discipleship

In this video the pastor says some things which I find very troubling. His view of evangelism and the purpose of the church is the common view across the "church growth" movement today. I fear this mentality is spreading rapidly - even into some of our conservative holiness churches.

For those of you who have read my blog in the past you may remember this post about what Bill Hybels is feeding his people these days.

So what do you think? In a future post I will share what I feel is the proper role of evangelism/outreach and the church, and what I believe the purpose of the church service is. Let me know what you think about the views in this video.

  1. Even though I do agree with you on various points, is there anything happening in the world besides this "God-forsaken" phenomenon known as the "emerging church?" Maybe since they're all busy doing it wrong we should get ourselves motivated and show them the correct way.

Or we could always stick with the easier alternative....simply sitting on the sidelines criticizing.

  2. I agree with you wholeheartedly on this one. Last night, our Prayer Meeting Bible Study asked the question "What is the purpose of the Wednesday evening prayer meeting?" A couple of the things that came up were spiritual refreshment and encouragement. If I'm not supposed to go to church to be refreshed, then I'm in trouble. That's why I enjoy Campmeeting and IHC so much!
